Places to Visit

Coniston is a small village in the south of Lake District. The biggest city in this area is Windermere but we found Coniston more picturesque. In the village you will find a very intimate atmosphere with small and cute shops and some pubs around where you can sit and relax while sipping wine or going for a pint of ale. Apart from the village there are two main attractions, the Old Coniston Man a mountain which will give you amazing views of the area around.

We didn’t have time to go to the top, but it is not very hard to climb it and if the weather is good this is an amazing for a day outdoors. The other option is Coniston Water, the third biggest lake of Lake District. In here, especially during Summer, you can enjoy the weather and practice some kayaking or canoeing.
Food and Drinks
Coniston Inn
The Coniston Inn is a hotel next to the Bluebird Lodge where we stayed overnight. For this convenience we decided to have one of our late meals in here. It is a dog-friendly pub which we really liked it, but I understand it can be a problem to others. However, you have to remember by being in Coniston you are in the countryside. We chose the burgers which were of expected quality. The desserts though were not of our taste – just whipped cream with alcohol. Overall, the atmosphere was relaxed and informal and the meal was enjoyable.

Lakes Hot Spot
Still in Coniston and after a long day of climbing we decided to stay at our room and order some food. We decided by the pizzas at this place, Lakes Hot Spot. To order you have to call them and collect the food which is fine because Coniston is not big and you get quick to everywhere. The pizzas were okay, I mean they were tasty but as happens in many places without competitivity the prices were a bit higher for the product itself.

Yewdale Inn

In the centre of the Coniston village, you can find this pub. We only had drinks, but we could see this is a popular spot where the local people stop by in the end of the day. The atmosphere was relaxing, even though there was a group of very noisy men. The girls who work there in the end of the night apologised to us but obviously it wasn’t their fault. We didn’t have a chance to try the food, but it seemed a good choice for a late evening meal.

Accommodation – Bluebird Lodge

We stayed at the Bluebird Lodge (Guesthouse) for 3 nights. If you are looking for a place just to sleep, have a good breakfast in a very scenic landscape in Coniston and close to Windermere this is the place to go. The breakfast was good, and the homeowner was super friendly. The “less good” thing was perhaps the small size of the room and the bathroom (my husband had to do some gymnastics to use the toilet). This guesthouse as all other accommodations have to implement some rules to comply to covid-19 guidance from government. For that reason, the breakfast had to be chosen the day before i.e., food and timing. This is one of the most common rules we have encountered since the pandemic.

Overall, as I said if you are just looking for a place to sleep for a good price the Bluebird Lodge is our recommendation.
